WOBURN — A fine run for the North Reading Little League Williamsport (12-year olds) team came to an end in the District 13 final as they lost to Reading 8-3 at Weafer Field in Woburn last Saturday. With that loss, North Reading ended up going 4-1 overall.

Reading scored three runs in the second inning, four in the third and one in the fifth.

All three of North Reading’s run came in the bottom of the third.

“It was a hard-fought game but we made too many errors,” said North Reading manager James Boviard. “It is tough to come back when you get down 7-0 and they have a good team.”

Christian Lava was the losing pitcher as he went 3 2/3 innings allowing seven runs.

At bat, Lava had a good day going 2-for-3. Tyler Boviard, the coach’s son, went 2-for-4 with two runs batted in as the other run scored on a wild pitch that allowed Lava to come home.

North Reading had seven hits overall as Reading was able to avenge an earlier loss.

In the semifinal game on July 8, North Reading edged guest Wilmington 2-1 in a thriller at Benevento Field.

Trailing 1-0 going into the bottom of the sixth, the locals rallied for two runs. Lava doubled and scored on an error to tie the game. James Wyatt singled and Brendan Levin pinch-ran for him. Levin then scored on a game-ending single by Asher Schulz, who became the hero.

“The bats came through in the clutch,” pointed out Boviard. “It was a good pitchers dual.”

Tyler Boviard pitched the first 5 1/3 innings allowing one run. Lava, who picked up the win in relief, got the final two outs in the top of the sixth.

On July 6, North Reading beat Reading at home, 14-13, in a slugfest for both teams.

Trailing 14-6, Reading fought back scoring five times in the fifth inning and twice in the sixth before North Reading shut the door.

“There was a ton of hits for both teams,” pointed out Boviard, as his squad had 19 hits.

Boviard led the attack going 4-for-5 with three RBI while Lava led the team in RBI with four going 3-for-5 as he had a pair of homers.

Charlie Cooper also had a monster day at the plate going a perfect 3-for-3 with three RBI.

Glen Mellow was the winning pitcher in relief going the final four innings allowing seven runs.

On July 2, North Reading beat host Wakefield 13-6 at Nasella Field.

“We exploded for 10 runs in the fifth inning and that was the difference,” recalled Boviard.

Boviard and Lava led the way again on offense as each player went 2-for-3. Boviard knocked in a team-high four runs while Lava knocked in three.

Cole Bakr was the winning pitcher going the final two innings allowing one run.

In the first game of the tournament, North Reading nipped guest Stoneham by a final of 3-2.

Boviard pitched a complete game allowing two runs, five hits, no walks and he fanned six.

Lava and Cooper led the offense as each hitter went 2-for-3. Copper had one RBI while RBI singles also came from Mellow and Wyatt.

North Reading had seven hits overall in that game.
